Can't tell you the best but might narrow your choices.
Cheapest to shoot- 30-06 or 7mm Rem Mag(elk fodder runs about 15-17 bucks)
Biggest to shoot - 460 WBY mag around 180-200 dollars a box
Smallest 25-06 rem around 25-30 a box good 117 gr bullest(not my recomondation but capeble of killing elk)
Good mid Range price and bullets 300 Win Mag,300 WSM,338 win Mag
True elk killer 300 Ultra Mag or .338 Ultra mag if you can get all the candy a$$es approval
What I would recomend 300 win mag 180 gr Federal classic Speer Hot core (17.99/box)
Good luck

Thanks for the welcome. Sorry I ain't been around, I thought I was dead. Actually, I forgot my password; left the matchbook I wrote it on in a bar. Things look differnt, 'round here. Great bunch of guys, though. Inbox was full of PMs, all nice. Seems kinda wierd for a crusty ol' mountin goat like me. Anyhoo, down to business. No newbie should be encouraged to hunt elk with a magnum. The '06 derivatives are the best elk medicine out there unless you weigh 250 lbs and can shoot one offhand and hit a pie plate at 200 yds. My personal favorite elk round is the 338'06, with the 8mm'06 a close second. The 35 Whelen is respectable too. Me? I carry a 30'06, with another back at the lodge as a backup. If I ever shoot out the barrel of one, I'll rechamber it for 338'06. Not likely, but it gives me something to shoot for at the range.

A .243 will kill an elk. My personal opinion is, though, use what ever you feel the most comfortable with. If you have a .270 that you can shoot accurately, by all means, shoot that rather than a big magnum caliber that you may not be able to shoot as well. I'm not sayingthat you can't handle a magnum caliber, I am just saying that you need to shoot what you aremost comfortable with.I have a .270 and if I ever go elk hunting, I will use that rifle because that is what I am comfortable with.
Just my .02.
