Default how was your 2002 season??

mine was great i got to hunt from september 1st throuh december 27 for a variety of game i think anyone should be proud of.
the summer fishing came to an end when antelope (rifle) deer and elk (archery) open in sept the hunt was on i logged more days in the woods this year than in the previous 3 all together and loved every bit of it.
i took 2 great antelope both does in early sept and spent the rest of the month archery hunting deer and elk. In oct i went to new brunswick and took a fine black bear one i can and will be proud of for a lifetime. when i got back home i only had a few days to deer hunt. i had passed up many bucks during the archery hunt and was begining to regret it when i scored a great 3x3 muley in the last hour of the season (i worked myself to death trying to get him off the mountain the next day was the opener to the elk hunt) opening day of the elk hunt went as planned the elk i had scouted and chased for the archery hunt were still in the area and at around 10 that morning i had a cow within 100 yards of me. (this turned very bad as i was not the only hunter to shoot her but a young hunter was happy to tag his first elk) and i had a much longer season to fill my tag november was not very eventful a few grouse as i chased the elk up and down as the snow would come and melt in early december my wife and i had our first child a baby boy(future hunter)but as christmas drew near the elk hunting went from good to great on the 21st i got my bull this was my first elk i was able to bring out whole and on the 26th i was able to take a cow(this one was packed out over a mile on a tobagon through waste deep snow) but still well worth the effort.

theres my season in a nut shell how was your season?? good or bad lets here about it.
thank you in adv.

I also had a great season.

Started with the general bull elk hunt in Oct. It was a great hunt with some small problems. I was invited by a guy at work that I am good friends with to go elk hunting in his area but I quickly learned he was a lazy hunter. He told me he hates to shoot anything further than 200 yds from the road and that he really doesn't even like elk meat. He also was telling me stories of how he takes 10 shots at an animal to bring it down. We got there a few days early to scout the area and there were no elk to be found. He later showed me an area where elk often grazed and sure enough they were there but it was on private land. I quickly surveyed the area and I realized there was a fence a half mile away and he informed me that it was tha national forest boundary. I could see where elk may travel and suggested we hunt the boundary. He did not like the idea and we nearly got into an arguement but I finally deffered to avoid conflict. The next morning was opening morning and he apologized and suggested we hunt the boundary, however I overheard him telling another guy in our hunting party that we were not going to see any elk. We got to the spot before dark and walked 200 yds when we heard our first bugle and the mountain errupted. Elk were bugling all arround us and I new it was going to be a great hunt. We saw enough bulls on public land for everyone to get one but I was the only one that connected on my shot. My other 3 partners unloaded probably 20 shells between them in an hour and couldn't hit a thing. We spent most of the day getting my bull out and I was very excited with my 4X5, which was my biggest elk. Later that day we found a spike that had been shot and either left or whoever shot him never found him and it was obvious that no one was coming for him. I suggested one of my partners tag him and they all refused. This bothered me a lot and if I had an empty tag I would have taken it. None of the other hunters in my group tagged out on that hunt and none of them have ever shot an elk. Great hunt but I will pass on hunting with them again. I called a game warden about the left elk but he rotted on the mountain and was never claimed.

Got two muleys but my buddy had one stolen from him on the first hunt, I posted the story on another thread. That hunt was somewhat a disaster and has made me think about junking my childhood deer hunting area and starting over somewhere else. There were people shooting at midnight in camps around us, people rolling rocks down the mountatin to spook deer out and non-courteous hunters all over the mountain. The second went extremely well and everyone bagged nice muleys the first day and we had a great time.

My second elk was real fun. We knew the area well and woke up before dawn to sit on a spot where we were sure we'd see elk. After a little light came up over the hill I spotted a cow laying about 450yds out in a small clearing. After an hour passed nothing crossed the trail we were watching. So we focused our attention on the cow and by this time she was grazing with 2 calves. After a few minutes they went out of sight in the trees and we decided to make a stalk. There was about 6 inches of snow and it was a little crunchy. After walking a 100yds we debated turning back and coming back later so we would not spook the elk out of the area but we kept going anyway. After walking a ways we stepped out from behind a tree to see 4 cows grazing at the treeline. One had heard us and ws checking the air for scent that would give us away but the wind was in our favor. She eventually went back to feeding and we were not detected. We sat and watched while I set up my shooting sticks and we eventually picked out our cows. By the time we had two niced sized cows picked out they were grazing at about 200 yds. We both fired at the same time and my elk was down with one shot but my partner missed his shot. He checked his rifle and found he had lost a screw in one of his scope rings and the probable reason for the miss. He didn't get his elk but we still have all of January to fill his tag.

2 elk and 2 muleys was my best year yet and nothing but good eatin for a while.

I had a great year, I was able to go on leave and travel back to Washington state and hunt deer, bear, cougar, and elk, I shot a nice 3x4 whitetail buck the second day of the season, then I shot my elk the second day of the elk season. Had a great time, spent a lot of time with my family.

jjt, Sounds like you had a good season. Congrats.

I read another post, where you you claimed to have shot a 400 pound bear. Is that the bear from New Brunswick?

there is a little conflict over the size of that bear the guide told me it wayed 360 to 400 lbs some of the guys on here commented they thought it only wayed 200 lbs
all i can say is it was a great hunt and it took four of us straining to pack it out fifty pounds a peace isnt much straining
all the same it was a great hunt and i enjoyed taking the bear i dont care if it weighed 50 lbs

For me, the time out there and the hunt is what it's all about, not the size of the trophy.

But I call it like I see it, especially on bs. I see you are back tracking now. You bragged about 400 pounds. The head on that bear was about the same size as yours, and I bet you are around 200 pounds.

Walk the talk or just keep on walking.
