Need Help Judging Bear Size?
This is my first time bear baiting. I have some bears coming in but am unsure as to the size. Here is a picture of the one I think is a shooter but I'm not sure. What do you think??
Also, does anyone know what I need to do to get him to come in the daylight?

not sure of the size, nothing to compair to,but on our quebec hunt we used 5 gal. bucket with meat scraps under it & a 20 lb. rock on top. the height was 22 inches total. when the walks to the bait, compair his size in compairson to the bucket set. mine was a little under twice the height.
275 lbs.aprox: 66 inches long. just to give ya an idea. GOOD LUCK. GB 50

There are several things you should look at; the ears on a large bear seem small even though they aren't the head on on a big bear has more muscle mass giving it a larger profile. Their neck and shoulders have a bulldog like appearance, they look like their head is attached to the shoulders without a neck. The belly will look like it's about ready to bottom out and have short legs; where a smaller bear will look more leggy without the large barrel.
Bear Hunting in Alaska by Tony Russ has an excellent chapter on judging grizzly, black bears have most of the same features.
Good hunting.

Looks like a good bear but like the previous people said nothing to compare it to. We use 55 gallon drums and generally if a black bears back is up to the top of the opening in that barrel it is a 6ft bear. as far as the ear size's they do get smaller when the head gets bigger which means a bigger bear.Good luck

Bears are really hard to judge when glassing accross a canyon, but over bait it's not that tough. That's a great Idaho bear. Also the bears go pretty nocturnal during the full moon or if you bait too close to town. I've left a radio playing at night to turn tables on them during the full moon, just shut it off when you get in your stand or blind.
