been talking to a friend and have decided that a diy hunt in akwould be a great hunt, preferably a float trip now can anyone help me figure out where to start planning , or better yet has anyone done this type of hunt

Contact Larry Bartlett at Pristine Ventures about his hunt planning service. The price you pay for his expertise is well worth it, and it's exponentially less expensive than a guided hunt. He can set you up with a good location, air charters, and/or rafting equipment, etc.and he's a good, honest, chap to deal with unlike some of thereal sleeze bags in the hunting industry up here. A DIY Alaskan hunt is probably the most logistically challenging hunt in North America so gathering all of the information you'll need just on your own will take a lot of time and effort on your part. Add to that the fact that even really good moose habitat up here usually has fewer than 2 moose per square mile and you'll know why so many DIY'ers leave here empty handed and overwhelmed every year.

dont think ya can diy in alaska, it is a law you must be guided..if i remember right

Moose can be done without a guide in Alaska. A guide is needed for dall sheep, mountain goat, and brown/grizzly bear

what could a non-res combo with moose without a guide? caribou if he sees one? odds he'll see a caribou in moose country? black bear? griz if you see one?

You can't hunt grizzly/brown bears without a guide..

Black bears are a possibility anywhere.... Caribou are a possibility in some areas..

Sheep/goats I could see being in rough dangerous country, I hear about guys falling to their deaths.

I think they need to amend that grizzly/brownie reg, haha, course maybe there's a better reason I'm not thinking of.

So I guess a non-res can DIY; Moose, Caribou, Wolf? maybe black bear? Would love if I could diy a griz/brownie though, even sheep/goat too.

Did it in 01,03 and 05 .The ice road first for bou,then unit 17 flew out of dillingham for moose and bou. One for three 1st time [58"] ,one for four [57"] in 05.Also took bou and black bear. I spent about $3,000 last time .
