308 on elk?
You pretty much ripped apart my second favorite cartridge the 270. How about the 308 with 180 gr partition bullets? In that same vein any experience with how swift scirrocco's perform on elk? Or should I just stay with the tried and true partitions?

I have never tried the scirrocco's but a family member shot them out of his 7mm mag and he said they were really fragile, performed a lot like the sierra boattails. They might be different outta the 308. I like partitions myself.

In .308 partition, fail safe, or barnes X.... 180 gr... to 250 to 300 yds.. closer the better as with any cartridge.
Used the 308 for 9 years, liked it, finally shot the barrel out and wanted a change of pace.. the search for the perfect rifle never ends.

The .308 AND the .270 are just fine for elk. Good 140's or 150's in the .270 and 165's or 180's in the .308. They will both have about the same limitations as far as distance and energy goes. Either one will do you just fine. Most of the time it isn't the gun that's the problem, it's the shooter. If you know how to use your rifle, no matter what the cartrige, then killing an elk should be no problem. And no I don't mean go out hunting elk with a .22! I find it kind of funny that so many people think it is such a dificult task to kill an elk but moose are killed with the 6.5mm every year with great success.
