My Dad is trying to set up a moose hunt and want's to use his Rem 740030.06 which he hasn't killed anything with and doesn't work all that well in the past, his other choice is 7mm and 270. I think he needs to move up.

The 30-06 is more than capabable of killing moose, of course there are calibers out there that are bigger but the fact remains you shoot what your comfortable with and make a good bullet choice..
2 years ago our hunting party shot 4 moose...
The 30-06 dumped the moose in 1 shot...TBBC
.270 took 3 shots (although the first one did enter the heart lungs) TBBC
7mm-08 did it in 2 ..Hornady Interbond
.300 Weatherby took 6......Shot placement being a huge huge factor...Nosler Paritions
Alot of hunters expect to their animal act hit when they are, that will never always happen no matter what you use...
I've seen hunters take more than 1 shot at deer with a 30-06 and I've seen moose and elk drop stone cold dead from the same cal after only 1 shot...
I've seen the same results with .300 and .338 7mm's...
I think everyone has.....
Every animal is an individual, some are more resiliant than others, no different than us..Some of us can survive 10 heart attacks and live to be 100,some can't get past 40 without dying to one.....
The fact remains all those cals you want to use will work if proper shot placement is performed, and proper bullet choice is considered...If you use abaddly designed bullet,no matter what cal it shoots from its not going to perform..
The first shot is the key shot, both in performance and shot placement...
But don't be discouraged and think less of the cal, if it takes more...
As far as the bullet goes,if you know you picked the right one, stick with it......The end result is a dead animal..

I have seen a moose shot and killed with a 22LR, all it takes is very good shot placement, the 30-06 is an awsome rifle, and my 270 is the most accurate rifle I have ever shot, any of them would do the job, and I agree with ought six, I would use it on all that he mentioned and on coastal browns, I would like to see any animal get shot in the eye and live to maul you!, it must have grazed the eye or something!!

Good God yes!!!!!!!!!!!
So is the 30-06 and so is the .270.
The bigger question.... Is the 7400 a gunI would take on a moose hunt? Not on your life.

Ditto to all he said. I hate the 7400. never would own one.
Out of all the options, i would take the one i am most comfortable shooting. Nothing worse then losing game due to the shooter not being as comfortable with one gun as another. Take the one he shoots best!

He needs to take all of his possible choices of rifles to the range and shoot them. I have never seen that fail to show the shooter the right one to use. If he likes the 7400, then he needs to shoot it until he proves he likes it or does not like it. You can't make the choice setting in your family room.
Here is how I make a rifle choice when elk hunting: 1) will I scratch up this very nice walnut stock? 2) Is it as light or lighter than other choices 3) Does it have the energy at 300 yards?
I have a choice between a Rem700 7mag and a Ruger SS 300wm and always take the 300wm because it is lighter than the 7mag and I shoot it just as good. Plus it will not get scratched up like the Rem700.

RE: Is 7mm mag enough for moose.
The ugliest shooting I've ever been part of on an AK/Yukon moose was with a 7mm Rem.; 4 shots in the chest at less than 50 yards, empty gun, trip back to the raft for more ammo while my partner stays with the wounded animal, reload and two more shots in the front shoulder followed by one in the back of the head to finally put him down. The front shoulders were hambergered from the hydrostatic shock at that range, and that was the smallest of the 8 moose I've been involved with taking! Leave the 7mm at home if you're coming to AK! The .30-06 is a much better choice, ranges should be less than 100 yards and big slow bullets = dropped critter with minimal meat damage.
