Is 7mm mag enough for moose.

Re: Moose are not cape buffalo! A working knowledge of prey anatomy[bullet placement] and reload or buy a quality big game bullet that will hold together. Not a deer bullet like ballistic tips or Sierra game kings! from past experiance both have failed [exploded]on deer under a 100yrds.Basketball sized entry/surface wounds you could stick your head in and not get your ears wet!Moose typically either vanish from sight dead on the first shot or stand and look at you giving no indication of being hit .Then drop on the followup.Caliber size seems irrelavent as they are not impressed by foot lbs.Have shot many with .30-30/170gr Hornadys..270/130gr hornadys,6.5x55/160gr Hornadys and yes with a .338/225Hornadys but couldn't tell the difference in killing power.Take a gun .25 cal or bigger you shoot well .Loaded with premium bullets you'll be needing the BBQ.................Harold

I think bullet construction, opperation of the firearm, and shot placement would be more important than your choice of those calibers.Use bulletsthat are intended for heavy biggame in a reliable gun and shot straight. Good luck.

I know a guy that shot a moose in Idaho with a 7mm mag with a 160gr. bullet he said it worked well. I would think the 150gr. barnes would work well. I think the 30/06 is awsome and would work well on a moose. I live in Utah will hunt elk with a 30/06 this year.

I used a .338 for many years and after switching to a 7mm rem mag a few years ago do not regret it at all. They hit the deck just as fast. Use the 7mm and don't worry about it.

Is the Rem unreliable?, or is it more the shooter?
If it's shooter, nothing will kill a Moose. Moose shots are comparitively close shots. So '06, 7mag are both very adequite. I'd trrust a 30-30 at those distances. (100 yards or less). They're not out there like antelope, mulies, or elk can be.
But here again, you've got to practice, practice, practice. The best gun you can use, is the one you have supreme confidence in.

My Dad is trying to set up a moose hunt and want's to use his Rem 740030.06 which he hasn't killed anything with and doesn't work all that well in the past, his other choice is 7mm and 270. I think he needs to move up.

No he is good with his 270, it's the gun. It's one of the Synthetic's and the rough parkerized finish makes it jam up. I might grab the gun next time and shoot the crap out of it till it does function. He doesn't shoot it near enough.
