ELKampMaster, I live in the Denver area like yourself. Went on my first elk hunt this year. We came out about like your Alabama boys! Made me realize there is way more to elk hunting than there is to deer plus came to discover (per my name) that camp is important - got to stay warm.

I can't understand what all the flak was about regarding your elk ambush! I talked with other successful hunters where we hunted and sounded like most were "stand hunters" and only stalked during the mid-day. I think OldeHunter has got it right - just jealousy or they just haven't been there and gave it a shot in person!

Down to business. Any chance you are looking for another member to your camp? Will arrive early help set up camp, stick around for the scouting, hunt hard, help pack any and all animals, and help pack up camp before leaving? What do you say?

I like the elk ambush technique. I did the same thing this year and you know what, the elk didn't do what we thought they'd do. In fact we thought they would run directly at us they went the exact opposite direction. The elk in the valley in front of us were running away from us and they were too far for a shot. But we were right about being on an escape rout and elk nearly ranover us coming from behind. I've never had so much blood rushing on a hunt before, for a split second I was actually afraid I was going to get hurt, elk were running literally within feet of me on both directions. Didn't get a shot off at the big bull so I got the 4X5 in the group. Had to wait till the herd ran by to stand up and shoot, I thought if they saw me they might turn on me cause they had already been shot at. Hunting public land during a general is tough enough, especially without horses, so why say its not ok to do that. If I have to pick between being in the 80% non-successful and 20% successful I'll pick the 20% anytime.

Elk 600 lbs. - 250 yds
Muley 180 lbs - 350 yds
Muley 150 lbs - 80 yds

All 7mm rem mag with 150gr partition handloads.

i agree with the TURD and the articbowman,,,,,,,,,,, the man asked a legit question about what was killed and what was used to do it with and he GETS KICKED IN THE MOUTH FOR A SIMPLE QUESTION... if you don't like what you read then just leave it alone and go to another thread.

beaverjack you must not have any youngans or grand kids that you can teach about huntin, shootin, campin, cookin, drinkin or anything else or you would be glad to SHARE your knowledge of the great outdoors with others who are interested in learning about the finer things in life, i was learned to the finer things of life and if i have any usefull info to give i will gladly give IT.........

Sharin' is overrated. Also a barkeep I know with big chalupas an' a magic smile. But thet's another matter. I share my mountings with hunnerts of yuppie backpackers, part time forest rangers younger than my boots, an' more blaze covered, magnum crazy city people than I care to think 'bout. Hell, I hate even sharin' the road, thet's why I live whar there ain't a stop light fer a hunnert miles! Maybeso I jus' lost my taste fer sharin'. Or more likely, I figure I'll share my dislikes fer some things so yall can see thet there's another side to huntin' 'stead of all this commercialism, ballistics crap, an' NRA bull****. Be glad to share some real huntin' knowledge soon as I can figure how to post a picture of a proper bowline knot! Let a feller tie 'is own horse on a picket this year 'cause he was an' eagle scout an' swore he could do it proper. After a long day of hard huntin', he walked back to camp.

you might ask a boy scout or a cub scout for a picture but then agin ya'll might have to SHARE some info with them, so you might just look on the web somewhere to get a picture of a real bowline knot, sh!t even this greenhorn can tie a bowline with my eyes closed.
