Thanks for explaining where "The Rule" came from. Given your situation, I'd have to say "Rules are rules" and you can argue until you are blue in the face, but nothing is going to change.
However, assuming you have already passed the hunter safety requirement, I'd ask permission to start putting in for preference points (too late for this year). If you live in CO, it won't cost you much, but would be a great way to "jumpstart" your elk hunting career. Heck, you could get OTC tags the first year or two w/ your grandfather and have 6+ points at your disposal by the time you had some field experience!

Nothing wrong with waiting until you've hunted deer, turkey, etc around home for a few years before tackling bigger game. Not that a younger person can't do it but it will give you some more hunting time under your belt. Plus as was mentioned, it's one heckuva Grad present...
