Over .270? . . . Only two. .300WM and must trusty 30-30 Winchester model 94. The two 12 ga's. T/C Contender with 14" 30-30 barrel.
Stranded on a desert Island and could have only one gun? . . . no question, .300 WM! I shoot everything Antelope size & up with it. Knocks elk down like a wet card table, and reaches out flat and fast several hundred yards for prarie shots.

I owned the 416 Rem Mag for quite a while. I bought it for Grizzly but really never used it for that purpose. I have owned 2 338 Win Mage, one 300 Weatherby and two 300 Win Mags as well a five 7MM Rem mags. I would not hesitate one skinny second however to hunt elk again with the 270, 280 and even the 260 and 6.5x55. These rifles will anchor elk in a hurry if you do your part. Always have and always will. I wouldn't be afraid to try the 25-06 either as many elk have been taken with that caliber as well. The same with the 243, although I aint touching that one. My brother in law has shot a couple with the 250-3000 Savage as well.

Original post: "....I am interested in finding out what else resides in your safe/cabinet (>.270 onlyplease) AND what is your primary "go-to" gun for big-game hunting...."
Since we've somehow sunk to this level....
243?
22-250?
223?
22LR?
next?

Perhaps RedRiver's sharpstick theory is appropriate here....

Originally by RedRiverHntr:
IMHO....I would recommend a sharp stick! Here is my logic.....
More game has been killed with it than any other.
It doesn't weigh very much.
It is readily available.
Very little recoil. (Provided you throw it. If you stab him with it you could get a little reverb)
As long as you limit yourself to the range you are comfortable with(i.e. don't try to stab him from a range longer than your stick)and use proper point placement, you will be satisfied with the results!!!
Just remember to get comfortable with your stick and practice sufficiently to acquire the proper confidence.

As an added bonus, when you realize that you have spent all this money, time and effort on what could havebeen an outstanding hunt, perhaps even the hunt of a lifetime, but yet had to pass up your shot due to the fact that you un-necessarily handicapped yourself by trying to use the least amount of force possible............
you can use your stick to actually do a field study as to whether that realization at that particular point in time is any more painful than a sharp stick in the eye!!!

We could go up North for Big bears. You take your sharp stick and I will take my 45-70.

I won't go into specifics about kinds of guns, scopes etc. because as I have said before, you know not whose eyes are reading this!

So I'll just list big game calibers found in my safe: (You said >.270 so I'll leave out the small stuff.)
270 Win
280 Rem
2 7Rem Mags
2 30/06 Sprgflds
300 Wby Mag
308 Lazzeroni Warbird
35 Rem
2 50cal Muzzleloaders

I am considering getting a 300WSM in the newRem Mdl 7 CDL "just because". I have been wanting a 300WSM and the new 7 CDL reminds me of a mdl 7 Mountain Rifle I traded off years ago and have missed since (it was a 7/08). More than likely this will be my "go too" rifle if it is a shooter.

Of the cals in my safe, I would probably stick with one of my 7mags if I could only have one of them. But then again, the Lazzeroni continues to impress me more each time I carry it out and I've had it since 2000. I am convinced that with Triple Shock bullets and it's awesome velocity I could kill ANYTHING that I wanted to with it at dang near any distance that was called for!

The 270 has always been my favorite deer gun. I have several and have used it successfully on elk. I still would not hesitate to use this caliber again on elk. My larger calibers are 300 Win Mag, 7mm Mag, 338, and 30-06's.

I do not believe anything drops an elk as fast as a 338 Mag. You still have to hit it in the proper place as you should with any caliber. With all these guns my main go to gun for animals above deer size is still the 30-06 with 150 or 180 gr Core-Lokts.

My 'go to' for elk is usually the
300 RUM, 7mm Rem, and/or the 444.

For deer.....don't really have a 'go to'. It's what ever suits the needs for the day and where I'm hunting. Really, more than I care to list.
