I don't think it's legal here in Colorado. I know they have miniums on size of bullets & energy levels. Ithink the 44 Mag is the minium. Range IMO 50 yards max. Do yourself & the elk a favor use a 30/06 rifle. CB

Goose,
For a beginner thats starting to hunt, pistol hunting is not the way to go.A .357 mag will kill a elk.The founder of the .357 S&Wused the cartrige to killEVRYTHING in North America including the Alaskan bears and Moose. In his words he said this"Never Again" why he realized as a excelled hunter he needed more gun, then a few short years later came the .44 Mag and this handgun has probaly killed more game accross the world than any other.
I use a 44 mag Ruger BH 7 1/2 barrel for hunting and I have killed a elk with it,a spike bull 6 years ago.At 35 yds broadside and a 300 gr bullet passed completly thru.
Handgun hunting is fun and challenging, but it's alot like bow hunting.Patince, proper shot placement, and knowing limitations. If I had to survive and the only gunI had was S&W Tropper in .357 I would use it,but no more than 20-30 yds on game bigger than deer.
