I shot a cow elk throught heavy timber in November right in the neck, and when I went up to check for blood all I found was a little piece of meat. Turns out I just missed the spine and hit a meaty part without any major vanes. Needlees to say, the several hours I spent looking for the elk later that day proved futile. It was long gone. Those critters cause a lot of heartache if you don't hit any vitals or take out their front shoulders.

Bigger is better ya allways hear about on elk rifles.. I venture to say the 30-30 prolly killed more elk than any other round made!!!
The first 2 elk I got were shot with a 25-35.

Default bigger is bigger.....

I knew it wouldn't take long for someone to put that burr under EKM's saddle......albeit a small caliber burr!!!

I've killed several elk with a .270 and 130 gr. Nosler partitions. None gave me much of a chase. However I do agree with EKM about shooting enough gun. I like the 30-06 equivalent, but I have had spectacular results witha 165 gr. Nosler partition, so that is where I now put my personal minimum. By the way, I don't agree with that old maximthatthe .30-30 has killed more elk than the .30-06. There just wasn't enough time between the introductions of the two cartridges, and most of that time was a period of exceptionally low game numbers. Because the .30-06 is such a far superior round, especially for larger game, I think it MUST havesurpassed the .30-30 in numbers ofelk killed. IMHO

finn,

"...first 2 elk I got were shot with a 25-35..."
... and now?
=================

RR,

"...burr under EKM's saddle..."
ayhhhh, a 22LR has done it --- but doesn't make it recommendable.

Like I said, it don't take long for them to sing you a song. It didn't.
Gotta take the general direction of the thread into account, support appears dominant.
It's not uncommon to pick up some outliers.

The new fusion Federal load. I was wondering if anyone had tried it. Sounds like it will do the job. The 30/06 & 180 grain bullet is good elk medicine IMO. It's what I use here in Colorado Rockies. CB
