I owned a browning a-bolt in 300 wsm and loved it. It shot 200 grain partition handloads into a3/4 inch three shot group at 200 yards. My handloads chronographed at 2850 fps. I never shot any game with it because I ended up selling to my father to help finance an elk trip. I'm certain it would be quite lethal though. I also owned a winchester M70 in 270 wsm that was quite a shooter. I sold (worked it off over the summer)it to my step son for his first deer rifle. He killed a nice 11 point whitetail this year with it and the deer only traveled 25 yards after being shot. The tracking job was done in the dark and the blood trail was impressive even under a flashlight.

Hey Carp I am use to seeing you in the waterfowl forum, Shato has the ballistics down. I went hunting Deer hunting with one of my buddies this year and he had a 300 WSM, he shot a spike with it the day I went with him and it blew the deer's insides out the exit wound pretty ugly, it maybe to much gun for our smaller whitetails here in the east.

Hey Carp,
Understand about the time.
I have used the short mag alot, mostly the 300 wsm and the 270 wsm.The 300 wsm is a great little round along with the 270.But I feel the 300 wsm dosenot give that much advatage over the older cartrige.I have killed elk with the 300 win and 300 WSM(my biggest bodied elk dropped to the smaller 300).What I found that is a good bullet for the 300 wsm is the Barnes 168 bullet.I gives you alittle more speed, and flatter traj. than the 180's.But you can also do that with the 300 win mag so I put it at a wash. The real diffrence is when you shoot 200 and 220's thats where the 300 win mag is supierior to the 300 wsm.
I notice no diffrence in accuracy between the 300 wsm and 300 win mag as with the recoil(I thought my '06 kicked harder)
Either round will do well as a all-around big-game rifle.
If you want one get one, they are good rounds,if you have a 300 win mag already I would look at something else.

I was thinking along the same line BBJ, But how often would I even want to shoot 200 or heavier..I think i may save up for one of the new Rem Mod. 7 CDL that is new for this year and get a 300 WSM. Wish they would chamber the 325 WSM but it sounds like the 270 and 300 are the only 2 they will chamber....

I think the 300 wsm is too much for deer unless you're going to use it for other game also (ex.Elk, Moose, bear etc..), I have a 270 wsm which is fantastic for deer/antelope...it too hits hard but doesn't damage much meat...
