Good Scope for Tikka 338 cal
I have a Tikka model 695 in a 338 Cal. and need a scope. I will be using this rifle to hunt WT deer in Canada this coming year ... shots up to 300 yards ... what would you suggest ...the reason I post this here is because a lot of you guys hunt with large cal rifles ...thank you.

3-9X40 or there abouts in which ever brand you choose.
I just put a 3-9X40 on top of my new .338 ultra mag. IMO 9 or 10 power at the top end is more than enough magnification for any big game hunting.

One of the major reasons that I suggest the ziess is that I live in northern Alberta and in November our days are very short. As such you want the brightest scope possible to make sure that you have no problems shooting during all legal hours.I used to have leupolds on all of my rifles but I did miss out on a couple of opportunities at last light with deer on the edge of cover because I couldn't place the crosshairs properly to ensure a clean kill. The slightly brighter ziess and swarovski scopes provide extra insurance against any such future problems.
If you were to usea $50 scope as some would suggest you would lose the best half hour of the hunting day ,namely the first and last 15 minutes of the day, because these cheap scopes are not bright enough in low light conditions..

I don't like the large objectives because I like to mount my scopes low on the rifle to ensure a better cheek position on the stock. This is not only for more accurate shooting but alsobecause the hard kicking rifles will give you a nasty slap on the cheek if your cheek isn't positioned properly. As such I don't use any scope that I can't mount in leupold medium rings and still have room for my butler creek flip uplens caps.I like the ziess conquest 3x9x40 but I am currently using swarovski 3x10x42 scopes on all of my hunting rifles. However my rifles do have heavier contour barrels so even a 44mm objective might fit with the same rings on a rifle with a lighter countour barrel.

I have to agree with the majority...Zeiss Conquest. 3.5-10x44mm
Used one for the past year on my Custom Ruger in .338 win mag and it can handle the punishment. Took in on a sheep hunt and itperformed flawlessly. Excellent low light performance and crisp image at all powers.
