I used to think so,but then again, i have recently seen hunting shows where they are shooting Elk with muzze loaders.

Millions of buffalo died to a 45-70 (45 caliber/70 grains of black powder), and the loads we use today are more potent. Out to 150 yards, a blackpowder is a great elk killer, period!
Here is another example: Which would you want to be holding if the whitetail buck of a lifetime walked out at 100 yards, a 22-250 or a 30-30? 22-250 fires a 55 grain bullet and the 30-30 fires a 170. In a foot lbs chart, the 22-250 has just over 1250 ft/lbs and the 30-30 has around 1350 ft/lbs. Pretty close, but compare them on the Taylor chart and it gives a big advantage to the 30-30 as it should. I going to take the 30-30 in that matchup.
Ft/lbs always gives an advantage to small/fast bullets because it squares the velocity. It is simply a mathmatical formula that is a "tool" to compare bullets, but it doesn't give us all the answers.

Thanks fellas for all the info. It looks like that in the future, I may end up buyinga decent used 300Mag and25-06 instead ofjust a brand new 25-06. My friend who wants me to come out Elk hunting lives outside of Steamboat Springs, CO. He doesn't have much ofa hunting background and has bagged a couple of nice Elk, so I assume that the hunting is good in that area.

RE: 25-06
I've talked to many people about the 25-06 including gunsmiths and hunters. Everyone i talked to said it was a little bit small and that it should be used for small game, but my personal opinion is that if you have good shot placement and you like the rifle then go for it. I have a ruger myself and i have the .308 compact model that they put out. Its very light and packs a punch!

Lanse,
If you have a No. 1 in mind and you're thinking about two different calibers you should look into getting a T/C Encore. You can get the two barrels that you want instead of two whole rifles and save quite a bit of money. It only takes a few minutes to swap barrels and you have a different caliber rifle.

Buy two Stevens model 200's and be done, if it's a pride thing buy a really nice 25.06. Cross the 300 Win Mag when you cross that bridge. I say this because you obivously will use the 25.06 much more than the 300, and nice guns last a lifetime.

Does the TC Encore go up to .300Mag. Also, I believe that the TC is a break action rifle? I have seen a lot of break action rifles in all calibers for sale lately. Maybe, its just me, but the idea of shooting a break action rifle still seems strange. Any idea on how they would stack up to a bolt action or breech loader in terms of accuracy and durability.

I agree with James but there are better calibers and I personnally would want a heavier round if I came in an awkward position with a 300+ bull that I may definitely want no matter what the angle, not to say that reasonable shots always must be taken!!!
