RE: 338 ultra mag
I am not sure who else chambers the 338-R.U.M.? Sako would be my first guess?
I have shot the 300, 338& 375-Remington Ultra Mags. All threerifles were remingtons &all were good shooters.
The 338-R.U.M.is one heck of a elk rifle.
Iboughta 375-R.U.M. just for grins lastwinter. I speak from first hand experience. The 375-R,U.M. kicks hard, but is fun to shoot game with.
I am sure the 338-R.U.M. willbe the same way.

I believe Ruger makes one as well. One word of caution, the only rifle that kicks worse than the .338 RUM is the .338-378 Weatherby (as per chuck hawkins calculations). It is a hammer, and if you are at all squeemish about recoil, watch out!

RE: 338 ultra mag
I own two 300ultramags and have fired a 338ultramag.Recoil with the 338ultramag is noticeably harsher. To be honest though, the 300ultramag shoots flatter and has produced very quick kills onnine elk and two moose so far.Actually the quickest kills that I have ever seen on big game.As such I don't see a need to step up to the 338ultramag for any game in north america.

I have shot four caribou, a black bear, and a moose with my .338 RUM. All except the moose were one-shot kills. It is a fast, flat shooting rifle and I have been impressed with what it can do to large animals. It shatters bone and anchors those beasts NOW! On my moose last year, I shot him in the lungs, then anchored him in the neck, as I did not want him to enter the river just a few yards away. I missed the spine in the neck, but the force from the shot actually knocked him down, right THERE! Impressive. I have complete confidence in this round and highly recomend it. It does kick like a bastard though

I have the remington .338 RUM and I love it. I have taken 2 bull elk with it and both where longer range than I wanted, but I new how the gun would shoot and they were the only shot. I have complete confidence in this round at longer ranges (longer than my 30-06). When I first bought it, I was a little apprehensive of the recoil, but then after the first shot, I didn't think it was as bad as I had heard. Actually, I have a remington 760 30-06 with just a plastic "recoil pad" and the 338 has about a 1 inch rubber pad and I feel the 30-06 kicks harder. maybe I need to get a better recoil pad for the 30-06 . I would actually think that the 300 RUM would kick harder because of the smaller case neck. Is there a reason you don't want the Remington? I have nothing but good things to say about it. The .338 RUM is a pretty easy caliber to work up a load for too.

Stubblejumper is totally right on the budget. if you don't reload your own, you will pay at least around $2.00 per round. I think I only paid around $550-600 for my Remington. you should be able to find one cheaper. Usually caliber doesn't make that much of a difference for price.
