Default 150 gr. for elk?

I'm a minnesota whitetail hunter. I've been hunting with the same Ruger M77 30-06 with 150gr Winchester Power Points for years. I have never had any problems with 150gr for whitetail and an antelope out in Wyoming. My question is can I get away with the same set up (mainly the gr bullet) for elk hunting as I have for deer?

I would go with a 180 gr. Barnes X, Nosler Partition, TBBC, Swift A-Frame, or Winchester Fail Safe. Good luck.

Stone, IMO I would'nt useanything less than 180 NP on
Elk. I know some would use less than that, but it's a
gamble if you are not a sniper orsharp shooter. I have
used .270, but got lucky that day. You know, it's like
catching a 25lb basson a 10lb test line!

BOTH OF THEM ON THE SAME DAY WITH FED.270/ 150gr NP, 1994
The Elk is a bull long spike!

Sniper, the reason I did it is because of the same
things we hear on the forum, you're under gunned!
Yes, maybe I was, but my partners were'nt as lucky
as I was that day.

I agree with handloader and rebel hog. Go with a solid constructed bullet such as the Nosler Partition in 180gr or if you want to go with all copper bullet like a barnes or failsafe you could drop down to 165 gr.

I would never drop below a 180 out of an 06 for elk, except as mentioned with the X bullet or Failsafe, which allows you to drop down one bullet weight without sacrificing penetration.

Ka-Pow, It is! At my age I know it will not happen
again. I have others from Canada, but not as
memorable as this one!
