First time for Elk
Hello, I am a hardcore Whitetail hunter from Wisconsin.
So I know nothing about Elk. I am going to be hunting North of Glenwood Springs CO 19th - 26th
Has anybody seen any elk up that way??
Also I purchased a 7 MM MAG (Wisconsin is mostly Slug Gun)
I am shooting 162 grain Hordany SST
Does this sound like a good Elk killer.
What are some good Methods for hunting ELK???
Hope you guys can help me....
Thanks

RE: First time for Elk
The 7mm mag is a great elk killer. 162 gr is just about right but I haven't heard great things about the Hornady SST but I've never used them, I like partitions. My guess is though you hit him where it counts and you'll be stocking the freezer.
With elk I like the spot and stalk technique. Take a good pair of optics and do a lot of glassing. The hottest times will be the hour after sunrise and the hour before dark. Elk move a lot so it may take you a day or two just to figure out where they are. In late October they will probably still be up high unless there is a lot of snow. But start with your long range scouting which you are doing on this board. Call the local Fish and Game office they may give you some good info. Getting into winter there are a lot of ranchers (at least in Utah) that don't like elk because they compete with livestock. See if there are any ranch owners that would like you to take an elk off thier hands. I once went door to door in a November cow hunt and a guy told me that there was a herd in his backyard as we spoke and we could use his picnic table as a rifle rest.
Welcome to elk hunting and to the board.

another tip is to make sure you shoot proficient with your new rifle. i've seen alot of people have problems shooting at long distances when they are not use to it. i'd practice to make sure i could shoot consistently at 400 yds.

I'd stick with a '06 an' 180 partition loads. The 7 mag is ok, but the 175 grainer is best with bigger elk. Better to haggle over yer boots then yer rifle. Good warm socks too. A quiet day pack an' a wide-brimmed hat is essential. These bill cap fellers look like drowned rats when the heavens open an' mother nature gets the runs. Use wool, avoid swishy nylon clothes. Carry 2 or 3 cow calls cause they freeze up. An' remember, the first rule fer killin' big bulls is not to kill small ones.

PS, SSTs suck. Jack rabbit bullets, plain an' simple.
