Uh, do sniper rifles come chambered in .270? 500 yds is a loooooong way. A great quote (paraphrased) from the movie Jurassic Park: "they were too busy trying to figure out if they could, and didn't consider if they should".

No, most are chambered in 300 win mag, or 50 bmg anymore. Though I still wouldn't shoot a 300 win at 500 yards. The quote from jurassic park is very fitting.

The VAST majority of military sniper rifles are .308, and have been for well over 20 years. The majority of sniper rifles currently being built by the MTUs are also .308. There are some applications for the 50 cal, and they are currently being used in Iraq, as they were when we were inSomalia. Some civilian police tactical units use 300 mags, .223, and a few other calibers, but they are in the minority. Most still use the .308.

My comment about the sniper rifle was a joke. My point was that I would not shoot at a deer with any "off-the-shelf" rifle, regardless of caliber.

I know that the Armyrifle team uses a modified Rem. 700 action chambered in 300 win mag. Many of the "field rifles" are the same. Many are chambered in 7.62 NATO aka 308. The point wasn't what the army used, more that 500 yards is too farfor the average joe to be attempting.
