Chronic what 180 are you shooting now? If it is a quality spitzer (preferably a boat tail but that doesn't really matter) then I wouldn't bother changing. A mule deer is no harder to kill (from a physical aspect) than a whitetail. A 180grn wont be over 2"-3" lower at 400yds than an equally built 150 and they will still out penetrate the 150s as well.

I would suggest +3" @ 100yds and you will only have to put it atop the back at 300yds and about a 1.5' over the back if you are confident with a 400yd shot (bullet drop is easy, it's the wind that can be the kicker!!!). A couple boxes of ammo and an afternoon on a long range will give you all the practice and confidence (or prove your limit if shorter!) you need for your upcoming hunt. The main thing is you want to see what your rifle is doing in 100yd increments all the way too 400ish yds or whatever distance you quit grouping inside of 6-8 inches at. Write down that information and then put a small business card sized piece of laminated paper taped too your stock with that trajectory info on. That way you can see at a glance what you need to do. It is easy to forget those numbers when breathing heavy and staring at a nice trophy about to bound over the hill. (If you have the inclination and money a mil-dot scope would eliminate the need for the lil slip of paper!)

Good luck and above all have fun,
RA

150, 165, or 180 grain any of these are perfect for deer aslong as you are able to hit the deer in the vitals otherwise it doesn't matter if you got 200 grains because say if you hit the deer in the gut it could still get away easily I preferebly like 150s for deer that is what my dad shoots my uncle and me and we all get our deer down in 1 shot as long as we hit them in one of the vitals.

If your confident with it, why not stay with the 180? As stated above, find your maximum effective range and stay within it. I use 165s in my 06 for antelope, mule deer, and elk.

Mule deer areno harder to kill then whitetail, so I would shoot the most accurateDEER bullet out of your gun period !. I would site it in dead on at 200 yards. No guessing here ! ..........200yards.....On thing you will notice out in Wy compared to back east is you should be looking bucks over good, with binoculars, before even picking up your rifle !.......I been to Wy twice once for Mule deer and then 6 years later for whitetail in 1999. If your hunting good land, it's very hard not to gettrigger happy. Get yourself a good pair of 8x42's. a laserrange finder is nice also, I used one on my 150 class whitetail, shot it at 310yards. For me that was a very long shot at alargest buck I ever had in my scope. I used 300win mag with Nosler B.tip 180gr handload, it shot the most accurate in my gun. I wouldn't hesitate to use a 30-06 out there. Get comfortable shooting @ 200yards.................L.M
