Well guys, today was a bust. Big surprise. I had a good time though, saw 5 does moving through the area, even had one that got curious and came over for a peek when I rattled.
4 1/2 weeks left in the season, I have at least 10 more chances to get close to this buck.

Allright guys, we need updates!
So far, since our season went out - I did manage to find one pretty good buck who has been holed up behind some houses on the farm that I hunt. From the looks of things, he's been there all year, just in such an inaccessible area that nobody has bothered him. Odds are, he'll be there again next year - and I have a good game plan to get after him.
Also I went spotting last night, but it was practically blizzard conditions - so I only saw a few deer in 3 hours of riding around the area. I'll be back out soon - and the sheds are starting to fall... So...

Well Quick.. it's like this..
I got one more buck tag... but the buck I've been after this season is not understanding his role. I've actually been hunting him since 2006 and he is 1 TOUGH cookie! He's not huge.. but he'll go about 140-145". He just is different than any buck I've ever had the pleasure of dealing with. He is a deliberate animal and just will not make the mistake of moving during light. He did pass me at just under 20 yards sometime in November but just after shooting light.. and I just would not attempt such a shot.
His most defining characteristic is his own choice of bedding. It's a small island amidst a sea of cattail.. and its no bigger than a standard 2 car garage. It has no trees.. just the thickest mess of thornes and grasses that you'll ever see. The best part.. it's right on the nearby road. It's also surrounded by ankle deep water that is now ice.. but more slush.
And this is the best part about the smartest SOB I've ever encountered. You can't get to him unseen or unheard. On the backside of the island is a pond which wraps a good 1/2 around the island. Then of course there is the road.. that takes up about a 1/4 of possibilities. And the last 1/4 is the best.. It's a wide open field that rolls up about 70 ft. higher in elavation.
So what he does, in his infinate wisdom, is sits on his island when the wind blows from the western direction (across the pond) towards his back and faces the hill. This way he can never be surprised. How do you like them apples...
Last year he would've just made 135-138" as a real nice 8.. and he was a 3.5 for sure. I had 2 good encounters with him.. but he just slipped by out of range. This year he's a 4.5 yr. old. His greatest difference is his noticeable mass.. or what I could see of it in the dark.
He is my greatest competitor.. and I have hunted him hard. But have backed off and only went out to hunt him once in 4 weeks. (I've been helping Justin do a little nanny-whacking at the farm he hunts). I am just waiting for the right moment and the perfect wind. The rest is up to him.
Sorry for the long post.. I was bored...

I'm surprised at the score, when I first saw him with ground shrinkage I figured he'd be around 50.

Holla at a playa!
Awesome work Mcoo - Way to step it up at crunchtime! I know you've been battling some nasty weather- so you definitely earned that one, buddy.
DH by a nose on the homestretch.
