About the Retriever - Physical Characteristics
Coat
Labradors have three vibrant coat colors that are recognized by the AKC - yellow, black and chocolate. Their coat not only has aesthetic appeal, but is it extremely important to the dog. It helps to protect them from freezing water temperatures. The coat consists of two layers. The topcoat is a little rough to the touch and does not lie completely flat.

A coat that is too flat and slick may indicate that the undercoat is not well developed, and therefore not as useful in water. The undercoat is a soft thick layer beneath the top coat, acting as insulation and working together with the natural oils in the coat to help repel water. This important double coat helps to insure protection against wetness and coldness.

Eyes
A great characteristic that is a hallmark of the breed is the eyes. They so easily impart the good, easy going nature of the dog. They are truly the window to the soul, showing how sweet and kind the lab's disposition is.

Head
The triangular shaped head is a unique physical characteristic of the dog. It sets the dog apart by not closely resembling that of any other breed. The skull is broad, with a well defined muzzle. The wide nose with well developed nostrils contribute to a keen sense of smell. The ears hang close to and far back on the head in a triangular shape.

Mouth
The jaw of the lab is important, especially if it is a hunting companion. The teeth come together in a scissor-like fashion, enabling them to carry game very gently without damage. This is what is known as a soft mouth.

Body Size
Labradors are neither large nor small, they are classified as a medium size dog. Adult males are between 22 to 24 inches at the shoulders, and adult females are around one inch smaller. The adults' normal weight range is 65 to 80 pounds, with the target being 70 pounds for males and 65 pounds for females.

Body Structure
The labrador's body shape is very athletic and well proportioned, allowing it to perform many different functions with ease. The body is very muscular, yet has finesse. Labs have powerful torsos, with sturdy legs, a strong back and an otter-like tail. It resembles an otter's tail by the fact that it is thick at the base and tapers at the end. The tail acts as a rudder when the dog is in the water.

The neck is an important part of the body, and if of proper length, allows for the retrieval of game to be that much easier.
