Hooded merganser (lophodytes cucullatus)
Feeding on fish, crustaceans and insects, these birds are strong swimmers and divers that live in the lakes and rivers of wooded areas. They can be found around the Great Lakes and New England areas and in the extreme western parts of Canada. Growing close to two feet in length, these birds have a rather distinctive appearance. They have brown bodies, white chests and black backs in addition to their telltale black heads with the bright white spot on the back half. (Females are slightly lighter all over with a paler crest.)
