American coot
These birds live and look like a duck - they frequent open waters while dabbling and diving for a variety of foods with their gray bodies, black heads, red eyes and white bills. (They are actually members of the rail family, though.) They grow to over a foot in length, live on freshwater during the year and saltwater in the winter, and can be found all over the US and in most parts of Canada.
