The old method of training used very antiquated techniques. There was usually only one method used, and that was domination. The trainer would dominate, intimidate and use force and punishment in order to train. By using these fearful tactics, the dog would be submissive and obedient, but it would not be happy. Punishment will repress any methods

of communication, making training hard on both trainer and dog. If a dog makes a mistake, and knows he will be physically punished, he will be focused on the punishment, not on the training or commands he is following. And if he does not focus, he will continue to make mistakes, thus increasing the punishment and the fear of the punishment. This just becomes a vicious circle. For example, if a hunting dog trained by these methods was out in the woods and maybe went too far and got lost, or did something wrong, he would not be focusing on finding his way or finishing the hunt. He would be fixated on what punishment would be waiting for him when he got back to the trainer. This type of training does not allow a dog to be a dog. It suppresses the dog's natural happy attitude. If the dog is not happy and resents the training techniques used, he may hold a grudge and will be much harder to train, or even develop a special relationship with.
