Tail flag Search: |
Method used to warn other deer of danger. Upon sensing a possible dangerous situation, a deer will raise its tail halfway. If the danger is confirmed, the deer raises it’s tail straight up and flees. The tail flag provides a visual sign which warns other deer of danger. When fleeing, the tail flag helps the other deer of the herd spot each other and follow the head deer to escape.

Tapetum Search: |
A membrane on the back of a deer’s eye which reflects light, improving the deer’s vision. The tapetum is responsible for the phenomonen of shining.

Tarsal gland Search: |
A gland in deer located on the inside of the hind leg. The deer urinates on the gland, which mixes with oil produced by the gland. This creates scent, and helps with marking behavior.

Taxonomy Search: |
A system of classification based on many criteria (physical characteristics, genetics, etc.) to sort out how animal species are related to each other.

Tend Search: |
A buck stays close by a female in heat, not being aggressive, but waiting for signs that she is ready for breeding.

Tending Search: |
The period right before estrus when a buck and a doe are seen together. The buck will stand by the doe, waiting for her to enter estrus. He will stand alert and protect her from any other bucks who may wish to mate.

Texas Double Search: |
This is a marking test where a long retired dead bird memory mark is thrown so that the line to the bird requires running just behind the back of the diversion flyer guns. An inexperienced dog is tempted to hunt for another flyer rather than drive out to the retired memory bird. This concept is said to have originated in Texas where land is flat without much cover in order to judge the more natural aspects of marking.

Thicket Search: |
Dense area of coverage where whitails like to hide.

Tight Hunt Search: |
When the dog runs directly to the area of the fall and after a short hunt in a small area directly around the fall, finds the item. A very good thing.

Tiller Search: |
To measure the tiller is to measure the perpendicular distance from the bowstring to the points where the riser and limbs meet. The tiller is the difference in these two measurements.

Tom Search: |
Male turkey.

Topographical maps Search: |
Maps that show elevations and depression of the land. They are useful for locating areas that may harbor deer.

Trailing Search: |
The dog follows a scent trail rather than the usual route determined by the fall of a mark or the route to a blind.

Tree call Search: |
A call a turkey makes while roosting in a tree.

Triple Search: |
Three items a dog sees thrown for it to retrieve. Items are not thrown at the same time. A triple tests the dog’s memory as it must pick up one item, return to it’s handler, then go get the other item, bring it back, then go get the third item and bring it back.

Tripod stand Search: |
A portable stand, similar to a tripod holding a camera, supported by three legs that position the hunter above the deers’ heads. The legs converge to a seating area for the hunter.

Trophy Search: |
A mature buck with a large set of antlers.

Two-Down-The-Shore Search: |
Generally, a water double thrown so as after picking up the go bird, the dog must swim by the go bird fall area and pick up the memory bird. This is a tougher concept than it sounds and is a basic concept for advance dog work.

Typical Search: |
Antlers that only have points growing off the front side of the main beam.
