Factors Search: |
Elements can influence a retriever to veer off line. These include wind, terrain, water, cover and diversions. The more advanced the dog, the more they are able to overcome various factors to hold the line.

Fall Search: |
- The spot on the ground or water where the item to be retrieved fell. (2) The time of year when we see just how well our training went during the "dog game"/"off-season.

Fawn Search: |
A fawn is a baby deer, distinguished from adults by a white spotted coat. Newborn fawns are almost scentless, saving them from being noticed by predators. Fawns instinctively play, by quickly running away from their mother and back again, sometimes bucking and zigzagging. This gives them practice for eluding predators.

FC Search: |
Field Champion. An AKC title that is used as a prefix to the dog’s registered name. A retriever who has won 10 points, including a first place in the Open or Limited Stake at an AKC licensed field trial.

Feather Search: |
A 2-5 inch sheathing made of feather-like material that is attached to the shaft of the arrow. Used to cause arrow rotation which increases speed and accuracy of the arrow.

Feral Search: |
A synonym for wild animals.

Fetch Search: |
The dog moves quickly towards the bird or bumper and picks up the object without hesitation.

Field Trials Search: |
A competition for certain hound or sporting breeds in which dogs are judged on ability and style in finding or retrieving game or following a game trail. In retriever field trials, they are judged according to standardized objectives, and also against each other. Placements are 1st through 4th. AKC field trials started around 1931 and are considered by some to be the “big league” of field competition. With regards to retrievers, accurate marking is of primary importance. The marks range from 150 yards to upwards of 450 yards. Gunners and handlers wear white coats in the field to make them identifiable to the dog. However, guns will “retire” or go out of sight once the mark is thrown. A dog that marks the fall of a bird, uses the wind, follows a strong cripple and will take direction from his handler is of great value.

Field Work Search: |
Dog training generally conducted away from the area around the kennel. Includes concept work or marks and blinds.

Filoplume Search: |
The tiniest, hairlike feathers on a turkey.

Flare Search: |
When a dog avoids continuing on a straight line on which he was sent due to pressure applied previously in that general area.

Flat Throw Search: |
Also, known as a square throw, this bird is thrown directly across from the thrower. From the dog’s point of view, it is a 90-degree throw.

Flehmen Search: |
Also known as a lip curl. A buck will curl his lips and suck scents into his vomeronasal gland in order to analyze them.

Fletch Search: |
The plastic vane or feather that is at the end of the arrow used to stabilize the arrows flight path.

Flyer Search: |
This term sometimes refers to the gun station at which a live bird is shot; can also refer to the live shot bird used in marking set ups. This is a dog’s favorite bird. In hunt tests or field trials, it is not practical to use live birds on every mark. Dead birds are sometimes thrown with an accompanying shot. Dogs love the flyers so much that it can distract them from watching the dead-bird marks. Or, a dog can be tempted to return to the fall of the flyer.

Flyer Station Search: |
Gun station where the live flyer is shot.

Forage Search: |
Another word for teh food deer eat.

Force Search: |
an influence that causes motion or a gain against resistance. If used properly force can correct a behavior in a dog.

Force Fetching Search: |
Teaching a dog through the use of classical conditioning (stimulus/response) methods to pick up and hold an item until told to release it. Generally accomplished after the adult teeth are in place in the 6 -8 month age range.

Force to a Pile Search: |
An extension of Force Fetching. Pressure of some sort is applied in association with a command to go. Helps to create the obligation upon the dog to so when sent to a blind retrieve. When done properly, a dog can develop dependable and positive attitude toward his work.

Force Training Search: |
The training that teaches the dog that he must pick up a bird, hold it and deliver to hand the object he is commanded to retrieve. This training makes the retriever reliable.

Forehead gland Search: |
Gland in the forehead of deer used to leave scent on branches and twigs rubbed by the deer.

Fountain Search: |
two marks (a double) are thrown from two different gun stations in opposite directions, one right, one left.

Freezing Search: |
Dog refuses to give up a bird entirely, or without extreme measures upon command.
