The hunting world is filled with a variety of different terms and phrases that may mean one thing to a seasoned veteran but make no sense whatsoever to someone who is just starting out.

Cable Guard Search: |
Holds the cables to the side to ensure arrow clearance.

Cable Slide Search: |
Fits on the cable guard and helps the cables move smoothly across the cable guard. New Teflon cable slides are said to add speed to your bow because they reduce the friction so greatly. Pure Teflon is a clear or milky white color. If the slide is not white, it's not Teflon.

Cackle Search: |
Type of call a turkey emits.

Call Back Search: |
A list provided by the judges prior to the next series in an event that indicates those who are invited back to continue participating in the event. Those who do not make the "call back" list have been disqualified for some reason.

Calling Search: |
Imitating the different sounds deer make to lure them into shooting range.

Camouflage Search: |
Coloration that helps the body blend in with the surrounding environments- whether it’s a fawn with spots or a hunter’s clothing.

Campaign Search: |
The pursuit of a title for a dog. "They will be campaigning several nice dogs this year."

Carnivore Search: |
Carnivores are predators that almost exclusively live off the flesh of other animals.

Carrion Search: |
The flesh of dead animals.

Cast Search: |
To give the dog a specific direction through the use of hand signals and/or body movements to direct a dog’s path to a retrieve. Used commonly on blind retrieves.

Cast Refusal Search: |
The dog does not respond or respond correctly to the direction or cast given by the handler.

Center serving Search: |
The center portion of the bowstring is wrapped (or served) to protect the bowstring from damage, either from the release aid or from the string hitting the cable guard.

Center Shot Search: |
Is the point that places the arrow shaft directly in line with the string grooves on compound eccentrics or the center of the limb tips on recurves or longbows.

CERF Search: |
Canine Eye Registry Foundation. A registry created to evaluate and clear breeding dogs of hereditary eye defects including Progressive Retinal Atrophy and Retinal Dysplasia. It is recommended that any dog in your breeding program be evaluated annually for hereditary eye defects.

Cervidae Search: |
Taxonomic family to which deer belong.

Champion Search: |
This is a title given to a dog that has won a championship on the bench at an AKC licensed dog show. It is a title used as a prefix to the dog's registered name.

Channel Blind Search: |
A water blind run in an area that due to the close proximity of the bank on both sides makes it very tempting for the dog to exit the water and get up on land.

Character point Search: |
The first point extending from the main beam upwards on whitetail’s antlers.

Cheating Search: |
When a dog avoids cover or obstacles enroute to or returning from an item to be retrieved.

Choke Collar Search: |
A leather or chain collar that is put on the dog’s neck in such a manner that the degree of tension exerted by the hand tightens or loosens the collar.

Clips or e-clips Search: |
Hold the axles in place.

Cold Search: |
A term used to define the running of a dog on a concept it is familiar with but the exact placement of the item is new to the dog. When we train, we generally run our dogs on "cold" marks and/or blinds. Our dogs know how to mark or run a blind, but they don’t know the exact location of this specific mark or blind.

Collar Conditioning Search: |
A process by which the dog is taught how to turn off the collar stimulation.

Columbian blacktail Search: |
A Columbian blacktail is a type of deer which live between California and British Columbia alongside the Pacific Coast.

Conditioning Search: |
A way of learning from experiences. Bucks become conditioned to be active only at nighttime during hunting season. They learn that there is little pressure during darkness than there is in daylight.

Conformation Search: |
The American Kennel Club sets standards on what dogs should look like, depending on their breed. Conformation means how close they come to the set standards. For instance, yellow, chocolate and black are the standards for coat color in Labrador Retrievers. If the dog has a coat that is reddish, she is not conformed to the standard, and probably is not purebred.

Conformation Search: |
The form or structure and arrangement of the parts in conformance with the breed standard.

Coniferous trees Search: |
Trees which bear cones. These trees do not lose their leaves in the fall, which makes them a great food source for deer in the winter. A good example of a coniferous tree is the pine tree.

Controlled Break Search: |
Dog goes before it is sent and is immediately brought under control by the handler without the use of pressure or force.

Cover Search: |
Vegetation, grass etc. that may conceal a bird from the dog, either on land or water.

Cover scents Search: |
A scent used to cover up the human scent during hunting.

Cow Search: |
Female elk.

Creep Search: |
The arrow moving away from the wall or your anchor point as you aim or get ready to release.

Creeping Search: |
Dog moves forward as the birds are being shot prior to being released by the handler. The dog is typically described as being unsteady.

Cresting Search: |
The colored designs on the end of an arrow shaft. Cresting tools are available.

Cud Search: |
Cud is food that goes through several steps to be broken down. The food is eaten, partly digested, regurgitated to be chewed more, and fully digested to finalize the process. Food that is fibrous requires this process to be repeated again. Food that is less fibrous and easily digestible may go through only one rotation of steps.

Cue Search: |
A verbal “signal” given by the handler to the dog that prepares the dog for the next task, ie: a “dead bird” cue lets the dog know that he will be running a blind.

Cut to length Search: |
Arrow is cut to specified length. Measured from bottom of nock to end of arrow shaft.
