While I’ve yet to even start hunting here in Iowa, many bowhunters in several states are already hard at it on some dandy bucks! Here in Iowa, our season opens on October 1st; thank goodness! The life of a hunting entrepreneur is not one of spending all one’s time in the field. In fact, I’m a desk jockey most of the time, writing emails, doing design work and living what seems like a lifetime on the phone everyday!
While I’m stuck behind this desk right now, I am lucky to have as many hard-core hunters working on behalf of White Knuckle Productions – in the trenches so to speak. We have a bunch of guys in Wisconsin right now that are chasing big whitetails and already having a heck of a season documenting their stories in the field on a nightly basis. Several good shooters have already been spotted, and they have been working toward that shot, which I have no doubt they will get at some point! There is A LOT of season left; heck – I haven’t even started yet!
Along with our boys in Wisconsin, we also have some new team members from the great whitetail state of Kentucky! Cory Chafin, Brandon Phipps, and Timmy Thacker are the new boys in blue; Team Kentucky Bootleggers! These guys have been working toward filming for WKP for some time and recently have been the first to strike in their home state of Kentucky!
Team “Kentucky Bootleggers” had been watching several really nice bucks all summer on a piece of Kentucky public land. They had been filming many of these bucks in-velvet, and captured some unbelievable velvet footage back in July. These guys had the bucks patterned and located feeding on secluded field, way back in a piece of public land.
Here are a couple pictures that were taken of the velvet footage these guys filmed earlier in the summer.

Timmy Thacker was first up to bat! The boys had placed some stands on the field edge they knew would produce sightings and likely shots at one or more of the big shooter bucks they had located. The big problem was, the night Timmy wanted to go in after these deer, the wind was wrong for the stand they had placed in the area. Knowing that the time was right to get a crack at the buck Timmy wanted to kill, he decided to take his chances, and re-locate to a make-shift ground blind on the field edge that would hopefully put him within range of the big buck he was looking to get a crack at.
Because Timmy relied on his gut and made the last minute adjustment on the fly; this was the result! Timmy slammed this beautiful 4-1/2 year old velvet 8-pointer – from the ground on public land! This is what trophy whitetail hunting is all about, making quick adjustments on the fly around weather conditions and deer movement! Congrats Timmy on a dandy!
Next up was Brandon Phipps. Brandon smoked this big ol’ doe on a morning hunt also on Kentucky public land! The last thing I want to do is give the impression that we are only buck hunters! Not only is killing does good for the management of the properties we hunt, but they also feed our families! I feed myself, my parents and many families throughout Iowa each season with the does I harvest!
Cory Chafin was the last Kentuckian to get in on the action. Cory’s buck was bedded in a thicket right adjacent to the food source. Cory and the Bootleggers decided that a stand move right to the edge of his bedroom was going to be necessary in order to get a crack at the buck during daylight hours! The move worked, and the first night in, Cory super-slammed the buck at only 8 yards!
Lucky for you, the above stories were all captured on-camera, and will be shown in our next video which will be coming out in early February.
Please be safe and wear your harness this fall! It could save your life!
