ATHENS ACCOMPLICE There were several new bow companies that popped up this year. One of them that got a lot of attention at the annual ATA Show was Athens Archery. They have a nice bow called the Accomplice that offers bowhunters everything they are looking for in a bow. Company President Jason Hudkins told me he wanted to build a bow that was smooth-shooting and made of the best components available. I believe he succeeded.
The Accomplice comes with an Athens EV2 cam which delivers high speeds, a smooth draw and no timing issues. The EV2 cam system produces 330 FPS. With all of that speed, bowhunters don’t expect a lot of vibration but thanks to a string dampening system, they don’t feel much at all. The Accomplice comes with laminated Barnsdale limbs which many believe are the most durable, longest lasting limbs available in the industry. In addition, the bow comes stocked with Winners Choice Custom Strings and with Bow Jax noise and vibration dampening devices on the limbs to further reduce vibration. It's a very forgiving bow, thanks to a 7-inch brace height. It's easy to carry around and maneuver in a tight spot because it’s a very compact 32 inches long and weighs 3.9 pounds. The thin grip is made up of a two piece wood laminate that really looks nice. The bow is available in draw lengths between 27-30 inches and draw weights between 50-80 pounds.
QUEST QS 33 G5 Outdoors recently introduced a new line of bows called Quest. The Quest line comes with a variety of innovative features bowhunters have come to expect from G5 Outdoors. The QS 33 is one of the new Quest bows that bowhunters on a budget will want to check out. It comes with a single cam that is as smooth as butter to draw and shoot, thanks to sealed ball bearings in the cam and an idler wheel. The single cam results in fewer timing issues without sacrificing speed. The QS 33 shoots an arrow up to 314 FPS IBO, reducing the chance of deer jumping the string and increasing the number of backstraps in your freezer.
The parallel-limbed QS 33 is super quiet and comes with several bells and whistles that reduce vibration and noise. It comes with a string suppressor that quickly stops the bow string dead in its tracks after each shot. The cable guard and limbs come with anti-vibration devices installed at the factory and the cable guard comes with an Alpine Archery Mach-5 cable slide that draws smooth, reducing friction that can rob a bow of some of its stored energy.
The QS 33 has a 7” brace height and is 33 inches long, which is just the right size whether you are deer hunting or sitting in a ground blind waiting on a longbeard. At 4.1 pounds, the QS 33 is perfect for the bowhunter looking for a way to shave a few ounces from his bow setup and will make hiking into a remote stand location a little easier. Other bowhunter-friendly features include an extended broadhead guard on the rise of the bow, machined aluminum pivoting limb pockets and a G5 Metrao bow string. The QS 33 comes with a modular draw length adjustment system and can be adjusted to fit bowhunters with draw lengths between 26”-30”. It is available in draw weights between 40-80 pounds in 10-pound increments. You can find the QS 33 in Realtree AP Camouflage.
MCPHERSON MONSTER Mathews Archery has a new line of bows called the McPherson Series. The new McPherson Series Monster is an amazing bow that is sure to get the attention of any bowhunter looking for lightening-fast bow. Mathews is known for developing new technology that is second to none and this year is no exception.
The Monster is a dual cam bow that features Mathews' new Advanced Vectoring System (AVS). The cable from the opposite cam comes and wraps a bearing on the cam instead of the axle like the other two cams. When drawing the Monster, the bearing causes the cam to rise as the archer draws the bow, storing more energy than a typical cam. As the archer comes to full draw, the bearing actually drops back down, allowing for higher let off. The bearing ties the two cams together which ensures the bow timing is synchronized at all times. The AVS System is extremely efficient and according to Matt McPherson, the AVS two cam is the most efficient dual cam he’s ever tested. It stores lots of energy. The Monster shoots an arrow 353 FPS while the Monster XLR8 (the beefed up Monster) shoots 360 FPS. The Monster has other great features including the Quad V-lock limbs. It’s Mathews’ first quad limb bow. The V-Lock system spreads the load over a larger area than other bows, resulting in very little stress on the limbs. The Monster has Mathews' exclusive String Grubs on the strings which reduces vibration, resulting in more speed. It has a Harmonic Damper at the top end and a Harmonic Stabilizer in the bottom end of the riser which destroys vibration. A roller guard reduces friction, increasing the dynamic efficiency of the bow and like all Mathews bows, the Monster comes with an inline Maple Grip.
The Monster is a speed bow so the brace height is a short 6 inches. The overall length of the box is 33.5 inches, weighs 4.4 pounds and is available in weights from 40-80 pounds. The Monster comes in draw lengths between 25-30 inches.
My favorite feature is the AVS System. A bow that stores lots of energy, is easily tuned and delivers all of that energy downrange is something every bowhunter should look for in a bow.
